This is not my job!

I am currently tasked with reviewing resumes. This person will be fulfilling some of my job duties. I'm also expected to teach, train, and guide them. None of this was in my job description when I got hired. I have plenty of work to do, and more is added to my plate every day!

But, I will do it, and with a smile on my face, and I will not complain. Here's why...the job we're hiring for is entry-level. Not entry-level in the sense that most security entry-level job posts you see requiring 5 years of experience, a CISSP, sacrificing your first born, etc. This job is actually for an entry-level person. This is for someone that wants to break into the field. This is for someone that wants to learn, grow, and develop their skills. Guess what, I've been there.

We, as experienced professionals, expect too much from entry-level folks trying to break into the field. We want "x" knowledge and "y" certifications. You know what? Give me someone with a basic understanding of the concepts, a great work ethic, and a desire to learn, and I'll show you, someone, I can guide that hasn't developed bad habits with a side of narcissism.

So, yeah, it's not my job to select and train new talent, but it is my duty. Because training and developing this person is right on so many levels.

1. So many people did the same for me when it wasn't "their job" (Looking at you Linda Fay, and Eric English).

2. This person is expected to take over some of my job duties, making my life at work easier, and allowing me to focus on more important tasks.

3. We have such a shortage of viable professionals in security, that we need to nurture more talent.

I say all that to say this...mentor, someone. Embrace the young, hungry talent that just wants to be guided in this industry. Think back to when you started, and who taught you, because you didn't get to where you are by yourself.

Be well, stay hungry, drive, strive, achieve, and be better tomorrow than you were today.
